The climate
Tyrol lies within the Central European climatic zone and is characterized by a very humid climate. The summers are short and relatively cool, the intensity of the sun increases with altitude.

The Alps
Tyrol belongs to all the important geological zones of the East Alps.
The Lienz Dolomites, between Draual und Gailtal, from part of the Southern Limstone Alps.
Grossglockner, with 3,797 m Austria´s highest mountain, is shared between East Tyrol, Carinthia and Salzburg.

Tyrol shares borders with Germany (Bavaria), Italy (South Tyrol) and Switzerland as well as the Austrian provinces of Vorarlberg, Salzburg and Carinthia.
When South Tyrol was ceded to Itlay in 1919, East Tyrol was isolated from the rest of Tyrol and is now accessible via Salzburg (Felbertauern tunnel) or Italy (Pustertal valley).
