NATIONALPARK "HOHE TAUERN"

In the "Hohe Tauern" there is one of the last natural landscapes of Austria. This original area is one of Europe´s most fascinating landscapes.
In the seventies three Austrian provinces - Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol - made an agreement. They decided to form this nature protection area.

With its 1800 square kilometres, it is by far the largest nature protection area in Central Europe.
About 170 sqaure kilometres of the Hohe Tauern National Park are covered with glacial ice.
The “PASTERZE”, at 9 kilometres, is the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps.

The “GROSSGLOCKNER”, at 3798m Austria`s highest mountain, lies in the centre of the National Park.
In the Hohe Tauern National Park there are 304 mountains that are higher than 3000 meters and there are 246 glaciers.

In the Hohe Tauern National Park there are about 10.000 species of animals.
The most famous animals there, which can be watched by visitors, are the ibex, the chamois, the marmot and the golden eagle.
