DIA DE SANTO AMARO – O VARRER DOS ARMÁRIOS
On the island of Madeira is celebrated on the day of Santo Amaro (January 15) a particularly festive and ceremonious, placing it on the table delicacies identical to those of Christmas Day.
Besides being the date to dismantle the cribs or Lapinha, a little all over the island of Madeira, the day is dedicated to Santo Amaro, a peculiar use too joyous and festive, "the sweep of the lockers."
Small groups of men and women roam the homes of the neighbors and friends, singing songs, accompanied by bass drums and guitars. With a broom and a shovel to sweep the remnants of Christmas, they usually carry a bag designed to collect small gifts, usually cakes and sweets.
